2027 New Moons: the darkest nights
If you want to see faint stars, the Milky Way or meteors, the Moon is the enemy. The best nights fall within about three days of each New Moon:
Jan 7 · Feb 6 · Mar 8 · Apr 6 · May 6 · Jun 4 · Jul 3 · Aug 2 · Aug 31 · Sep 29 · Oct 29 · Nov 27 · Dec 27
The New Moon of August 2 is also the day of the year's great total solar eclipse. Read our guide to the August 2, 2027 eclipse.
Why the dates shift every year
A full cycle of lunar phases, the synodic month, takes about 29.5 days, while calendar months run 28 to 31. So Full Moon dates drift about 11 days earlier each year. Occasionally a month gets two Full Moons, the second called a Blue Moon; 2027 has none.
